Hall of Fame
Monty Cartwright served as the head track and field coach at SOU from 1985-98 and as the Athletic Director from 1995-2001. He also served as the head country coach for a stretch during that time. In track and field, Cartwright coached seven NAIA National Champions and 43 NAIA All-Americans. The success was equally as great at the Regional level. Cartwright’s teams won five Regional Championships and 79 individual crowns. The Raiders also had a pair of team championships at the conference level and 25 individual champions. During his tenure as Athletic Director, the Raiders had one of the most prolonged eras of success for Raider athletics. During that stretch, the Raiders captured the 2001 NAIA National Wrestling Championship, advanced to the 1997 Final Four in women’s basketball, advanced to the NAIA Quarterfinals in football twice and won eight conference championships. Also contributions to the student-athlete scholarship fund nearly quadrupled and three women’s sports were added. Cartwright also spent 22 years as a professor in the Health and Physical Education department.
