Carl Nelson was the Dick Butkus of small-college football at Southern Oregon College in the mid-60's. He was a ferocious hitter as the starting middle-linebacker for 4 years. Carl was a first-team All-Conference performer in 1964, '65, and '66. He was co-captain, special teams captain, and the leading tackler all three years as well. Carl's leadership continued in the military. He served 11 years in the Navy and attained the rank of Commander. He flew 911 combat missions in Vietnam, and received 3 Distinguished Flying Cross awards and the Purple Heart.
