Graduating in 1961, Dietz competed in football, track and field, basketball, and baseball.  He was all-conference in baseball for three years and later signed with the Detroit Tigers baseball organization.  In 1967, Dietz received the Rollie Truitt Award, which is presented annually to the person who has done the most for amateur baseball in Oregon.  Since 1972, he has been head baseball coach at San Diego State University and has compiled a 923-421-15 win/loss record.  Dietz ranks in the top ten for career wins at the NCAA Division I level.  In January of 1983, Jim was the recipient of the Super Star Award presented annually by Collegiate Baseball newspaper for outstandging achievement in amateur baseball.  In 1993, he received San Diego's Citizen of the Year Award.
